Born in the idyllic setting of Lake George in the Adirondacks of New York State, Heather Van Dyke's early years were spent outdoors, climbing trees and exploring nature, a formative experience that would indelibly shape her creative ethos. The tranquility and raw beauty of the landscape fostered a profound connection to nature, laying the groundwork for her artistic journey.
Heather's artistic inclinations emerged in high school, where she found herself at home in the art classroom where she eagerly delved into drawing, painting, jewelry-making, pottery, and photography. Though largely self-taught, these formative years laid a foundation that has supported her lifelong pursuit of artistic exploration and self-discovery.
Beyond art, Heather has dedicated 35 years of her life to serving women and men’s health care at Planned Parenthood and served as a Mental Health Care Manager while also supporting teens as a Life Skills Youth Advisor at Harrisena Community Church. These roles reflect her commitment to human connection and well-being, values that permeate her artistic practice. Whether through listening, art, or teaching, Heather's life has been a testament to the power of empathy and creativity.
Despite these professional commitments, her passion for personal artistic creation never waned. A recurring theme in her work has been her fascination with trees. She sees them as living sculptures— their reaching, stretching forms strikingly reminiscent of the human body. To Heather, trees stripped of leaves symbolize our own naked vulnerability, evoking fundamental emotions such as joy, release, profound sadness, and wonder. Her work captures these threads of connection, creating visual dialogues that resonate with universal human experiences.
Heather’s artistic process is intuitive and exploratory. She often engages with mixed media, valuing its ability to express complex textures and vibrant colors. Without a predetermined endpoint, her creative journey begins with an intention to evoke deep emotional resonance. Drawing from universally connective elements like trees, earth, water, and air, her work unfolds organically, guided by the materials themselves. This technique not only results in unique pieces but also imbues them with complex layers of meaning that invite viewers to engage deeply.
Her affiliation with organizations such as the Lower Adirondack Regional Arts Council (LARAC), North Country Arts and Saratoga Arts has offered her platforms to showcase her work. Heather's art has been featured in several galleries and offered as donation in her ongoing support of local charities such as Operation Santa Claus, earning her recognition for her distinctive voice and vision.
Heather Van Dyke’s work stands as a testament to the enduring power of nature and our innate connections to each other. Her art not only captures the essence of the human experience but also invites us to see ourselves within the broader tapestry of the natural world.
After high school, Heather began her career as a photographer for a local newspaper, coupled with her work in portrait photography and exploration into graphic arts, kept her connected to the visual world.
